PROJECT NEWS

1st year of the project

1st year of the project 900 400 SunHorizon Project

Some considerations from our project coordinator

Alessandra Cuneo – RINA Consulting S.p.A.

SunHorizon project started in September 2018 and will run until August 2022 for a total of 48 months. The first year of the project has just ended and a lot of work has been performed in this period from all the project partners.

Some milestones:

  • The technology package final layout for all the demo has been defined. The different technology providers, together with the other partners, worked in a strong collaborative way to define the best layout for each demo site, based on the single constraints and needs.
  • Each technology provider strongly worked on its specific technology to improve design and efficiency with a decrease of OPEX and CAPEX. First preliminary simulation results of the TP performances were evaluated by TRNYS. SunHorizon TPs will save from 20 to 40 primary energy with a reduction up to 40% GHG emissions.
  • The monitoring platform architecture for the demos is defined, and a pre-monitoring phase will start in March 2020 in Sunisi and Sant Cugat demo sites. Here the full control concepts will be developed and tested.

During the next phase, the project will focus on the engineering design of the TPs installation in the eight demo sites, together with the tests of the improved technologies at CEA and CNR laboratories.

The first project results will be presented during the next year Sustainable Places conference (June 2020), together with the first stakeholders workshop. Stay tuned!

BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE DEMO SITES

The Sport Center demo site building (Hall Albert Moray) is a municipal facility (tertiary building) that has different spaces to develop all kinds of sportive activities.
The Albert Moray Sports Centers is a sports complex from 2006 and is located in rue des Chapeliers No. 2 in Ensival. The building has four gyms, where basketball, table tennis, fencing and martial arts can be practised. It also incorporates a cafeteria

Swimming pool of Verviers: The Verviers swimming pool is located in the beautiful Fabiola park, a stone’s throw from the city centre. With a 25m long and 14m wide, the large neighbouring pool with a smaller and shallower pool, in which young children learn to get used to water.

The swimming pool, whose current building is composed of several distinct areas, has different architectural features. Those differences can be explained by different exploitation according to the zones: the swimming pool, the cloakrooms, the offices, sports halls, technical rooms.

What are the energy challenges of your demo site?

For both demo sites, the energy challenge is the high energy demand and consumption. For the pool, there is a high level of heat. Current SunHorizon technology (BoostHeat) will not be able to supply all the energy demand.

From a technological point of view, it is planned to install 471 square meters of solar thermal panels on the pool roof, 200 square meters of thermal panels on the Moray Hall, 2 heat pumps of 20KW inside the pool and the Moray Hall and 2 tanks (Rathiotherm) on each of the sites.

Do you see any policy obstacles referred to SunHorizon technologies application, specifically related to the local/national regulations where the demo site is located and, more in general, at EU level?

The only obstacles for the Sunhorizon technologies are the tendering procedures – if technical specifications are too defined, it is not possible to propose Sunhorizon technologies. There is a need for demonstration and dissemination about those new technology combinations.

What is your motivation to participate in the project and which is your role?

GRE-Liege is an incubator of new project ideas. Its role is to foster innovation in the region. On top of it, Energy is one of GRE Liege development axis.

GRE-Liege often plays an intermediary role between public authorities located in the province of Liege and other large innovation projects as H2020 Project. It enables public authorities to participate in EU project. The GRE-Liège is very happy to be able to provide its assistance and expertise to municipalities in order to develop such projects.

Which are the expected benefits your company aims to demonstrate in the SUNHORIZON project?

The expected benefit of Sunhorizon is to identify new technologies to support GRE Liege public partners to lower their energy costs

and be able to replicate the use of the technologies in other public buildings in the future, thus to optimize the energy consumption in public buildings.

BRIEF PRESENTATION OF THE DEMOSITE

The Sant Cugat demo site building (Mira-sol Civic Center) is a municipal facility (tertiary building) that has different spaces to develop all kinds of cultural activities.

Mira-sol Civic Center offers: a wide program of courses and workshops; public cession of spaces; service to support entities and collectives of the neighborhood; revitalization of popular and traditional culture; child service activities; a stable cultural program with small-format shows.

It is located in Mira-sol neighbourhood of Sant Cugat del Vallès, a town close to Barcelona. The demo site building is divided in two structural areas, as it was constructed in two stages.

Currently, the heating and cooling installation (second stage building) is formed by the following equipments:
Reversible air to water heat pump: 93.6 kW (cooling capacity) – 96.3 (heating capacity)
Air handling unit: 110 kW (cooling capacity) – 67.78 (heating capacity)

Regarding the supply we have electricity (rate 3.0A with power P1: 65kW, P2: 65 kW,and P3). No Gas.

What are the energy challenges of your demo site?

In terms of energy the main purpose is to sectorize the air conditioning system according to the occupation (comfort temperature of each classroom), and  at the same time we want to reduce the consumption of air conditioning from machine that we currently have.

Do you see any policy obstacles referred to SunHorizon technologies application, specifically related to the local/national regulations where the demo site is located and, more in general, at EU level?

No, at local level the Municipality strategy and policy in terms of decarbonization and high efficiency refurbishments are completely aligned with the aims of SunHorizon project.

At national and EU level can’t see any policy obstacles to develop the SunHorizon applications in our demo site.

What is your motivation to participate in the project and which is your role?

Since 2019, all the new buildings constructed by the Public Administration must meet the nZEB standards. This will also affect buildings where a deep renovation will be performed, since the regulations normally force to refurbish by using the same standards as for the new buildings.

On the other hand, cities will play a major role in achieving the targeted energy and environmental objectives in Europe, by adopting specific actions.

Therefore, I consider interesting applying the SunHorizon technologies to Mira-sol Civic Center, coinciding with the H&C system renovation (sectorization of air conditioning system according to rooms occupation)

Which are the expected benefits your company aims to demonstrate in the SUNHORIZON project?

Is expected that the solutions applied in SunHorizon will rely on renewable, local energy sources to promote feasible alternatives to traditional fossil fuel-based solutions. The application of these solutions are expected to have a  positive impact in terms of: GHG emission savings and primary energy savings, among others.
The share of energy consumption from RES increases the primary energy savings and the CO2 emissions savings considerably. Furthermore, it is expected that the thermal energy bill is reduced despite not increasing the investment cost.
