Berlin (Germany)

Demo responsible: BoostHEAT

Type of building: Small residential. House with 2 apartments (220 m2) in the town center of Berlin. Solar energy potential: 10 m2. Existing individual gas boiler per flat for supplying Domestic Hot Water (DHW), space heating through radiators. Yearly heat demand: 60MWh,th

Demonstration action:

  • TP1, Parallel integration: Solar thermal (TVP) for space heating and for domestic hot water (DHW). The heat pump boiler (BoostHEAT) will be used to cover non-solar periods.
  • Solar panels installation on flat roof and connections to the cellar room
  • BoostHEAT and thermal energy storage (RATIOTHERM) installation in the cellar
  • Integrated control system for the smart operation of H&C
  • Redesign centralized space heating and DHW distribution system for the 2 flats
  • DHW and space heating meters per flat for operation costs breakdown

Replicability potential:

  • Small residential (single houses) with natural gas connection. New and renovated buildings.
  • All climates

Technical risks:

  • Access to the cellar for integration of the 2,000 l solar storage tank: division of the storage tank into a smaller tank
  • Overheating in the absence of heat demand: safety connection to the outdoor fan coil unit in the outdoor area from the BoostHEAt circuit

Difficulties encountered:

Most of the difficulties encountered are related to the fact that it is an historical building, such as

  • Roof reinforcement requirements path availability for pipes, chimney and wires (roof, ceilings, limited door, stairway, and basement room dimensions for components handling and installation)
  • Tilted roof integration late requirement caused the replacement of TVP high vacuum panels solution by standard solar thermal panels
  • Synchronizing owner parallel renovation work with SunHorizon TP1 integration work regarding financial, design, and installation decisions
  • Finding professional installers for a quite complex system integration in building in the extremely dynamic market after Covid-19 crisis

Estimated savings and impact:

  • 32% primary energy and GHG emissions savings

  • 25% renewable energy ratio

  • 578€/year cost bills reduction

Warning: the estimation has been done without taking into consideration the domestic hot water recycling loop because it was decided late.

  • SunHorizon @ Pv magazine

Pv magazine has published an article about solar thermal panel for large-scale applications. SunHorizon uses TVP Solar technology in its project. In particular, it uses TVP Solar panel in Technology Packages 1, 3, and 5. Click here if you want more information on them. The TVP Solar panel has an absorption surface of 1.96 m2 […]

Updates from the tests developed in CEA INES’ facility

In the first half of 2021, CEA experimental platform at INES is hosting the tests of three solar-based hybrid technologies developed by SunHorizon industry partners before the in-situ deployment phase during summer 2021: TP2, TP4 and high vacuum flat solar thermal panels. The test of TP2 involves Ratiotherm (solar heat distribution and 1.3 m3 stratified […]
